The Crown corporation has now received over 25,000 claims from a severe storm that swept through southern Manitoba on June 9, bringing heavy rain and hailstones the size of a baseball in some areas.
That means MPI has already had more claims than the previous record of 24,000, set after a 1996 hailstorm, the corporation said in a Thursday news release.
Last week, MPI vice-president and chief claims officer John Bowering said the insurer expects to see more than 30,000 claims from the June 9 storm.
To manage the volume of claims, MPI opened a dedicated hail response centre at its Gateway service centre on June 17, where claimants can schedule an appointment for a damage assessment.
More than 1,800 assessments have been completed at that centre, MPI says.

The second centre — which opened Thursday at MPI’s service centre at 1284 Main St. — will also offer appointments for damage assessments for customers in Winnipeg and surrounding areas.
MPI says it's prepared to offer 400 appointments daily between the two hail centres.
The public insurer said after getting more than 200 claims in the Interlake region, it is also offering damage assessments at its service centre in Arborg.
Customers can also get their vehicles estimated at MPI-accredited repair shops.
