Part 1 covered why clear prompts matter. This is the practical follow-up: templates you can adapt for everyday brokerage work. The pattern behind all of them is the same — say who it's for, what you want, and the format you want it in.
The anatomy of a good prompt
Four ingredients, in plain terms: Role (who the AI should act as), Task (what to do), Context (the documents or details it needs), and Format (length, tone, structure).
Rule of thumb
If a new hire could do the task from your instructions without asking a follow-up question, your prompt is good.
Templates you can steal
- Summarize — “Summarize this policy wording for a homeowner in plain language. Highlight what's covered, what's excluded, and anything unusual. Keep it under 150 words.”
- Compare — “Compare these two auto quotes. List the differences in coverage, limits, and price in a table, and flag any gaps a client should know about.”
- Draft — “Draft a friendly email to a client explaining that their renewal premium increased 8%. Acknowledge it, give the main reason, and offer to review options. Keep it warm and under 120 words.”
- Explain — “Explain overland flood vs. sewer-backup coverage to a client who has never heard the terms. Use an everyday analogy.”
- Check — “Review this application for missing or inconsistent information before I send it to the carrier. List anything that needs follow-up.”
Habits that level you up
- Give an example of what “good” looks like — paste a sample you liked.
- Ask for the format explicitly: a table, three bullet points, an email, under N words.
- Tell it the audience: an underwriter reads differently than a first-time homebuyer.
- Iterate — it's a conversation. “Shorter,” “more formal,” “add the deductible” all work.
- Never paste a client's personal information into a general consumer chatbot — use tools approved by your brokerage (see Part 5).
Why it matters
Prompting well is the single highest-leverage skill for getting value from any AI tool — and it's one brokers already have. You brief people for a living.
